Building a future on tradition

We’d like to take you on a short voyage into the past in order to tell you a little about the history of our organisation in a light-hearted manner.

In the beginning...
In 1897, Proton GmbH was founded in Mülheim am Rhein, then a town in its own right. The flourishing company created the protein product known as “Tropon”, which was intended to improve the nation’s health.

A simple consonant switch...
…and a year later, Proton GmbH became Tropon GmbH for trademark reasons.

A fresh start
In 1957, Tropon underwent a reorganisation, and its factories and laboratories were increasingly dedicated to research and the development of new substances. The sales and distribution functions were expanded, particularly in the area of psychopharmaceuticals.

A new Bayer baby
In 1969, Tropon was taken over by Bayer AG, becoming the pharmaceutical giant’s first wholly-owned subsidiary. The production facilities were expanded and research was intensified.

It started with 6 beds
In 1989, the clinical pharmacology department became an associated department of the Bayer Institute for Clinical Pharmacology in Wuppertal. Initially, the Department contained just 6 beds.

Getting a bit cramped...
...more space had to be created. In 1994, a new building created additional space for the clinical pharmacology department, providing 12 treatment beds on the first floor.

Growth in the new millennium…
In 2000, after more than 100 years in business, Tropon was taken over by the American investor group Advent International. The clinical pharmacology department remained under Tropon’s control and established itself as a Contract Research Organisation (CRO) under the brand name of ClinPharmCologne® – a service of Tropon GmbH. A further expansion brought the total number of treatment beds to 24 and added an outpatient unit with 6 treatment couches.

...and beyond
In 2002, due to growing demand, a further expansion added another 24 beds for overnight stays or treatment; the treatment room has over 16 treatment places. Today, ClinPharmCologne (CPC) has 70 treatment places.

A new outlook
In 2004, VIATRIS Holding GmbH, a holding company and part of the Advent group, merged with Tropon GmbH. Since Summer 2004, both companies have been operating under one roof.

Fast-forward to the future
At the end of September 2005, the Swedish pharmaceutical company MEDA AB became the new legal owner of VIATRIS Holding GmbH and Tropon GmbH. Our Institute continues to operate under its brand name, ClinPharmCologne® (now a MEDA service) and is now perfectly positioned to provide medical research and development services on a contract basis to both domestic and international clients.

In November 2006, after 100 years of operating as “Tropon”, the company was renamed MEDA Manufacturing GmbH.
It is our mission to continue our company’s long history of success far into the future...

...tradition demands it!
